The Little Baby Essentials That Deserve a Spot on Your List
The big purchases get most of the attention, but it is often the small everyday items that new parents end up reaching for constantly.
When you are preparing for a baby, the shopping list can become enormous.
There is the crib.
The stroller.
The car seat.
The diapers.
The clothes.
Then come all the little things you did not realize you would need until you suddenly need them at 2 a.m.
Some of these products are not particularly exciting.
That is exactly why they can be easy to forget.
A Portable Night Light
Middle of the night feedings and diaper changes are much easier when you have a soft light nearby.
A small rechargeable night light allows you to see what you are doing without turning on bright overhead lighting.
Look for something portable with adjustable brightness.
A warm light setting can also be useful for nighttime routines when you want enough light to see without making the room feel completely awake.
What to look for: Rechargeable, dimmable and portable.

Extra Crib Sheets
One or two crib sheets may sound like enough.
Then your baby has a diaper leak at midnight.
Or spits up immediately after you have just changed the bedding.
Having several fitted crib sheets means you can change the mattress quickly without waiting for laundry.
Look for sheets that fit the mattress securely and follow the manufacturer's recommendations for the crib and mattress.
What to look for: A secure fit, breathable fabric and several washable options.

A Portable Diaper Caddy
A changing table is useful, but your baby will not always be in the nursery when they need a diaper change.
A portable diaper caddy lets you keep diapers, wipes, cream, burp cloths and a change of clothes together.
You can move it from the nursery to the bedroom or living room without carrying everything separately.
Where to Shop
A Portable Changing Pad
A portable changing pad can be surprisingly useful.
You may use it for trips to the pediatrician, visits with family, travel or quick changes away from the nursery.
Some diaper caddies and travel organizers combine storage with a changing surface, which can be particularly convenient during the newborn stage.

A Baby Thermometer
A thermometer is one of those things you may not think about until you suddenly need one.
Keep a reliable infant thermometer somewhere easy to find.
You may also want a small baby care kit with practical items such as a nail trimmer, saline drops and a medicine dispenser.
If your baby is unwell, follow your pediatrician's advice about medication and when to seek medical care.

A Baby Nail Trimmer
Those tiny fingernails grow surprisingly quickly.
They can also be surprisingly difficult to trim.
A baby specific nail trimmer or file can make the process easier, particularly during those first few weeks when you may be nervous about using ordinary nail clippers.

A White Noise Machine
Your home may suddenly feel very quiet compared with everything your baby experienced before birth.
A white noise machine can provide consistent background sound and help mask everyday household noises.
Some models also include a soft night light.
The Hatch Rest is one example parents may want to consider.

A Feeding Station
Whether you breastfeed, pump or bottle feed, having your essentials within reach can make feeding sessions more comfortable.
Create a small feeding station with things you are likely to want during a feeding.
Think about:
A water bottle
Burp cloths
Snacks
Phone charger
Nursing pillow
Soft blanket
Bottles and feeding supplies if needed
The goal is simple.
Fewer reasons to get up once your baby is settled.

Storage Baskets
Babies may be small, but their belongings add up quickly.
A few attractive storage baskets can help organize diapers, blankets, burp cloths, toys, clothes and feeding supplies without making the nursery feel cluttered.
Choose baskets that are easy to move and large enough to hold the things you use most often.

A Car Organization Kit
Once your baby starts traveling with you, your car can quickly become another storage space.
A backseat organizer, portable changing pad, diaper bag and a couple of spare baby outfits can help you stay prepared when you are away from home.
You do not need to turn your car into a second nursery.
Keep a small collection of practical things you are most likely to need.

A Baby Memory Journal
Not everything on your shopping list needs to be practical.
A simple baby memory journal gives you somewhere to record first smiles, special moments, milestones and little details you may otherwise forget.
The newborn stage can feel long while you are living through it.
Then, somehow, it is gone.
Having those memories written down can make a meaningful keepsake later.

Do You Really Need Everything on This List?
Not necessarily.
One of the easiest mistakes new parents make is assuming they need every product marketed as a baby essential.
You do not.
Start with the things that are likely to make your everyday routines easier.
A few extra crib sheets, a portable diaper caddy, a thermometer, a changing pad and a simple storage system can be far more useful than another trendy nursery accessory.
The best shopping list is one that works for your family, your home and your budget.
You can always buy something later if you discover that you actually need it.
That may be one of the most useful things to remember when preparing for a baby.
